Why Cold Pressed?

When it comes to edible oils, it is necessary to understand the distinction between the two types, cold pressed and refined oils. The claim that all oils are equally healthy and have equal nutritional value is one of the biggest lies that the nutrition and food industry tells us. Cold pressed oil is scientifically considered healthier, but when these oils are mentioned, some question marks still appear in mind. In this article, we will talk about cold pressed oils.

What on Earth Does Cold-Pressed Mean?

Edible oils are oils that are liquid at room temperature and they have great importance for nutrition. Some of these oils contain high levels of omega-3 some and essential vitamins for the human body, such as vitamin E. Furthermore, these oils help with the utilization of fat-soluble vitamins. Some of these oils are called vegetable oils. Vegetable oils are extracted from seeds, kernels and fruits. If at least 98 percent of oil is made up of vegetables, that oil can be considered a vegetable oil. Examples of frequently used vegetable oils are sunflower oil, olive oil, linseed oil. These oils are classified as cold pressed or refined oils, depending on their type processing.

Cold pressed oils (also known as natural oils) are oils that have been processed without exceeding a certain temperature (40 °C according to the definition of the British Cold Press Oil Manufacturers Association) during production. With the cold pressing technique, oil can be produced from many different products for different purposes. The characteristic of cold pressed oils is that no heat treatment is applied during extraction as in refined oils. However, the so-called oil yield of cold pressed oils are lower than refined oils. The reason for this is that only some parts of oils, that is, the valuable part of the oils for the human body, are extracted from the products during the cold pressing process. Additionally, cold pressed oils have zero trans fatty acids they are cholesterol-free. Moreover, after production cold pressed oils they are only subjected to a simple filtration process that will not affect the quality nutritional values of the oil. Therefore, cold pressed oils are healthier than refined oils because the production process is much more delicate than refined oils. The result is a more natural taste and, above all, the preservation of essential fatty acids, as well as more vitamins. As a result of these, cold pressed oils have gained a lot of traction over the past few years became one of the most promising sector in the food industry.

What Are Cold Pressed Oils?

Black seed oil, sesame oil, almond oil, walnut oil, hemp oil, coconut oil, grape seed oil, pumpkin seed oil, pomegranate seed, rosehip seed, sunflower oil can be given as examples of the most consumed cold pressed oils. However, it is possible to extract oil from many seeds containing oil by cold pressing technique.

What Are The Usage Areas of Cold Pressed Oils?

The usage areas of cold pressed oils are not limited to the gastronomy sector. Contrary to popular belief, cold pressed oils to have a much wider range of uses, although we encounter them mostly in daily meals. They are used for different purposes in many sectors such as the pharmaceutical industry, biodiesel production, biomedical industry and alternative medicine. When we look at gastronomy specifically, cold-pressed oils can have a wide range of applications as well.

Can Cold Pressed Oils Be Used for Frying?

Contrary to popular belief, cold pressed oils can also be used as a frying oil, although this is not their main use. Cold pressed oils can be heated up to 130 to 180 degrees depending on the oil content. Although this is possible, the use of cold-pressed oils in frying is not preferred much. In fact, you don't have to worry that the healthy fatty acids will be lost when the oils are used in frying. However, the point to be noted here is that some cold-pressed oils lose their vitamin values during frying. Since a lot of effort is spent in the production of these oils to press the seeds and kernels only with mechanical pressing without heat treatment to preserve their nutritional values, namely vitamins and healthy fatty acids, the use of these oils in frying may in some cases contradict the purpose of the product.

Nevertheless, as Global Cold Press family, in the tests we have done in İzmir Ege University Laboratories in line with the wishes of our valued customers, we have seen that the cold pressed safflower oil, which was pressed in the machines we produce, preserves its nutritional values until frying 8 times in a row. In line with the results we obtained from these experiments, we can assume that cold pressed safflower oil is a suitable oil for home fries. From the feedbacks of our customers, many of whom are vegetable oil producers, and also from our own experience, we can say that safflower oil tastes good and it is worth giving a try!

Apart from this, thin oils such as linseed oil, walnut oil, hemp oil should not be preferred in frying because their boiling points are very low, but should be used in salad dressings refining meals.
